The beautiful Villa Senja is a peaceful oasis and luxury rental villa, hidden away in the rice fields of Bali. The villa is totally private and secure, and yet just ten minutes’ drive from the beach, shops and the internationally acclaimed restaurants of trendy Seminyak, on the island’s south western coast.
Bordered by terraced rice fields reminiscent of amphitheatres, and complete with a 17 x 6 metre swimming pool, the five-bedroom villa was designed entirely by its French owners. It was not built for business purposes; instead it is the realisation of a dream, a genuine home and a ‘living’ house, created to accommodate and fulfil the needs of a Western family who spend much of their time in Bali, but are happy for guests to stay in the villa on a rental basis whenever they are away.
The style is a romantic fusion of Colonial, Javanese, French and Chinese inspiration, harmonised with antique furnishings, artwork and treasures that have been gradually collected over the years. The structure of Villa Senja is rich in history and features an abundance of old teak wood.
The 54-square-metre salon is built around an antique Javanese ‘joglo’ house and boasts a breezy verandah extending into the tropical Balinese garden. Even the outside of the villa follows the lines of a joglo with its distinctive funnel-shaped, shingle clad roof.
The owners’ private collection of artwork from around the world includes old pictures from India, framed photos of Vietnam and paintings from Hoi Anh, the Vietnamese painting city. Indonesian artefacts include sculptures and statues from the islands of Bali, Timor and Flores. Broadband Internet access is provided for the use of the guests.
The locality of Villa Senja is dotted with some of the most impressive private residences on the island, and the sweeping view is enhanced on clear days by the magical sight of the Bali’s central mountain range, incorporating Mt Batukaru, Mt Sengayang and Mt Pohen.
Despite the close proximity to Seminyak, the traditions of rural Bali still prevail; cows are herded through the fields and the sound of ritual music is carried on the breeze. The sweeping beach at Seminyak is renowned for its world-class surf breaks, panoramic coastline views and legendary sunsets.
Umalas Riding Stables is just one kilometre from Villa Senja, and the area is also the location of the The Canggu Club, Bali’s first and only international private members’ club; offering sports, social and leisure facilities, including a state-of-the art gym, a 25-metre swimming pool and a tennis & squash centre.
Nirwana Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman, is a twenty-minute car journey. Convenient for all of the main shopping malls and tourist attractions, Villa Senja is twenty-five minutes’ drive from Bali’s International Airport.
