Area description & Area activities
Tanah Lot is a small coastal village in South Bali and is known principally for the dramatic marooned offshore temple of the same name. Tanah Lot means "Land in the Middle of the sea" in Balinese language.
Located in Tabanan, about 20 km from Denpasar, the temple sits on a large offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide. Tanah Lot is about 45 minutes by car north west of the main southern tourist areas of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak and is en-route for those heading to West Bali.
From Ubud it can reached in about 30 to 40 minutes by car. A visit to Tanah Lot for sunset is one of the most popular organised tours offered in Bali. Check at your hotel. Get around Once you arrive at Tanah Lot, park your vehicle in the official car park (Rp 5,000) and proceed on foot.
The area leading to Tanah Lot is highly commercialised and people are required to pay to enter the area. To reach the temple, visitors must walk through a carefully planned set of Balinese market-format souvenir shops which cover each side of the path down to the sea. On the mainland cliff tops, restaurants have also been provided for tourists.
